Essentials needed for a baby

I know its soooo tempting when you are pregnant and you see all of these cute baby products but babies do not actually need a lot of things. My advice is to choose good quality organic or natural where possible instead of buying things you do not actually need. Love, food and cosiness is pretty much all they need.

Here is my list of essentials..

SLEEPING:

Crib instead of a moses basket. I had a beautiful moses basket for my children but they grow out of them soooo quickly. They suggest they will still be sleeping in them until they are 6 months but I'm yet to see this. Once you stop swaddling them at 8 weeks they wake themselves up by knocking their hands on the side. A crib is bigger so it will definitely last this long.

A cot. Some parents may wish to put their little ones into a cot straight away which is ok but The Lullaby Trust do recommend babies sleep in the same room as Mum until at least 6 months to help with the prevention of SIDS and there may not be enough room for a big cot in your bedroom. Also for daytime sleeping you may want baby downstairs and you certainly wont want to be moving a cot!

A firm mattress that fits snuggly.

2 x fitted sheets

Blanket depending on the time of the year.

Big muslins for swaddling. I love muslins for swaddling as they are fairly thin and there is no chance of baby over heating.

Low emission monitor. Yes I do advise a monitor. I did not use one and I'm sure I woke my kids up half the time going in and checking on them! The one's with a screen where you can watch them are great but why am I advising a low emission one, well its to minimize radiation. Babies are more sensitive to electromagnetic waves because their brains absorb 60% more waves than an adults and monitors emit strong bursts of radiation even when on standby mode. There is a lot of information about this on the internet so I wont bang on about it but yes they are more expensive but very much worth it.

CLOTHING:

A couple of hats

Socks

6 x onesies/sleepsuits

6 x vests

Cardigan

Weather depending just add extra layers in the colder months.

TRAVEL:

Carseat

Buggy - with a raincover and possibly a sheepskin for the colder months.

CHANGING:

A changing table is not essential but a changing mat is. You can move them around, put them on the bed so you can save your back, use them in the bathroom to help with bath time and very helpful with those explosive poo's!

Muslin square's - great for the early stages when changing nappies (use with warm water instead of water wipes) and bathing.

BATHING:

Bath

2 x soft towels, ones with hoods are great

FEEDING:

Glass or BPA free bottles

Bottle brush

Possibly a pump, maybe do not buy one of these beforehand just wait and see how everything goes with the breastfeeding first of all.

FURNITURE:

Literally just a cot. You don't neeeeed a chair, you don't neeeeed a baby changing unit, they are nice and fairly helpful but again my advice would be to spend your money on good quality organic clothing and a cot and mattress instead.

PLAYTIME:

I love a baby gym, not sure why but all babies that I have looked after just seem to love them. You can change them quite easily to keep them interesting and they do not take up a huge amount of space.

A few toys and books.

Start with the essentials, you will get gifts and probably still end up with too much stuff ❤️
