Iron and sleep

Writer: Natalie StoneNatalie Stone

Did you know iron plays a big part in how well your baby or toddler sleeps?...

Until they start to eat solids babies get all the iron they need from breastmilk or formula, although some Mum's do choose to use vitamin D drops.

Once they start eating solids it is important you feed them foods that are high in iron along with a food high in vitamin C to help the body absorb it.

Foods such as green leafy vegetables, eggs, fish, meat and lentils are great (age dependant). Combined with a fruit.

Infants aged 7 - 12 months need 11mg a day of iron

Toddlers aged 1 - 3 years need 7mg a day

Pre-schoolers aged 4-5 need 10mg a day

Signs of iron deficiency are no appetite, slow weight gain, pale skin, low activity, irritable and poor sleep.
