THE IMPORTANCE OF SLEEP

Good sleep is important for babies and children in order to aid growth and brain development. Recent studies have shown that good sleep improves their appetites, brain function, attention, behaviour, learning, memory and

overall mental and physical health.

Lack of sleep causes irritability, stress, difficulties in learning, low motivation and contributes to anxiety, depression, ADHD and bipolar.

Children who sleep well are more creative, have better concentration, better problem solving abilities and are able to learn and remember new things. Not getting enough sleep can lead to high blood pressure, obesity, hyperactivity, a weakened immune system and health issues as they grow into adults.

Sleep builds brain cells, it directly affects a child's cognitive development and repairs and rebuilds cells. It allows the child's mind and body to rest, recover and restore. It is no less important than food, drink or safety and unfortunately children do not outgrow sleep problems, they must be resolved.

Sleep is also vital for parents as a lack of sleep due to being woken by a baby can result in the ability to cope with being a parent and function with day to day life. Long term a lack of sleep can cause stress, inflammation in the body, depression, anxiety, obesity, heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer.
